The third largest city in Alabama, is Mobile with a population in 2006 of almost 193,000 people. It is the center of the Mobile metropolitan area which has a population of 404, 157 people. Summer temperatures in Mobile range from the low sixties to the low nineties. Winter temperatures range from the mid thirties to the upper sixties. The breezes and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico has a big impact on the weather in Mobile. The city is impacted by hurricanes, and the worst storms to hit the city were Hurricane Frederic in 1979 and Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Hurricane Katrina created an 11 foot storm surge which hit Mobile. Lesser damage in Mobile was caused by the following hurricanes: Camille, Cindy, Danny, Elena, Erin, Florence, Georges and Opal.

Mobile has had the biggest economic developments in its history, over the last five years. Mobile has been called one of the most prosperous cities in the US. Some of the growth in the area has been due to Hurricane Katrina. Although the area suffered a lot of destruction from the storm, the need to rebuild has boosted the economy for the area. Wages have increased, jobs have increased by 22% and the unemployment rate is down to 5%. This city is a great example of how to recover from a natural disaster. One other example is the construction of 3500 new homes which were built in the last twenty months.

The Alabama State Docks in Mobile is expanding its container processing capabilities and its storage facilities. Its been rumored that a 1000% increase is planned. The city is competing for a $200 billion dollar government contract.  German steel manufacturer ThyssenKrupp is building a $4.2 billion steel mill in Mobile. The construction of this mill will bring 29,000 jobs to the area and 2,700 jobs once the mill opens.
