The capital and the largest city in Alabama is Montgomery. The city had a rich history in the Civil War and it was the first capital of the Confederacy. King, Jr was the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery from 1954-1960. Rosa Parks cemented her place in the Civil Rights movement on December 1, 1955 when she refused to give up her seat on a city bus for a white man. Her arrest sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The bus system was desegregated a year later. 

There were economic concerns in Montgomery during the 20th century, but it is starting to rebound. Hyundai is based in Montgomery and it's the home of their first assembly plant in the United States. A baseball stadium and a riverfront walk have been added downtown near with parks and existing historic sites. Plans are being discussed to build a second bypass, along with large residential and commercial areas in the city. The city is a major supply center for the US military and is home to some of the most critical computer systems for the military. The key military air war college military is located in Montgomery. 

Summers in Montgomery are hot and humid. Spring is short and warm and can last until September. Temperatures are mild in October and November. Winter weather varies, but is generally moderate. Temperatures can dip below 20 degrees, but that is rare. 

Interstate 65 is the north-south highway and Interstate 85 runs east and west through the city. Other major highways that loop around the city include: US Highway 31, 80, 82, 152, 231 and 331. Montgomery Area Transit provides public bus service for the city. Montgomery Regional Airport offers air service for Montgomery.
