Chandler is a major suburb of Arizona. It had a population of 176,582 in 2000. By 2005, the population had grown to 234,939. The Intel computer chip company has a major presence in Chandler. The Chandler Fashion Center is a 1.3 million square foot mall that opened in 2001.
Dr. Alexander John Chandler settled on a ranch south of Mesa. In 1891 he was the first veterinary surgeon in Arizona. He’d acquired 18,000 acres by 1900 and he was planning the Chandler Ranch Township. The town opened in May 1912 and the Chandler High School opened that same year. The town began to develop in 1913 with a luxury hotel and a golf resort.
The Great Depression of the 1930’s didn’t hit Chandler too hard, but when the cotton market crashed a few years later, the city was hit hard. Williams Air Force Base opened in 1941 and the population grew a bit. The population of the city had grown to 30,000 by 1980 and it has had significant growth since that time.
Agriculture has been a staple of the Chandler economy for year, including corn, cotton and alfalfa. There were ostrich farms in the city during the early 1900’s when the plumes were needed for women’s hats. The ostrich business lives on in the annual Ostrich Festival.
Manufacturing plants, communication and computer firms like Motorola and Intel are fueling the economy. Even though there are some large companies in the city, it is known as a bedroom community for the Phoenix metropolitan area.
