Tempe had a population
of almost 170,000 in 2006. The city is 39 square miles and the elevation ranges

In 1865, Fort McDowell was built along Salt
River and that provided protection for settlements down river. Two
of these settlements were - "Hayden's Ferry" and "San Pablo" which were west and east of Hayden

They grew alfalfa, barley, cotton, oats and wheat. Tempe was an amalgamation of these
settlements
A series of schools have been located in this area, beginning with the Territorial Normal School,
which eventually became Arizona
State University.
Rail service crossed the Salt River in Tempe
and it provided a link from the town to the national railway system. Over the
years, Tempe
became an important business and shipping center which served the surrounding
area.
Roosevelt Dam was finished in 1911 and it provided enough water for the
valley. Former President Theodore Roosevelt came to the area to dedicate the
dam and predicted that Arizona
would become a prosperous area. Little did he know that it would become a
population center for the southwest.
