Tucson City Moving Quote

Tucson is situated 118 miles from Phoenix and 60 miles from the border of Mexico. In 2005, the census estimated the population to be 515,526 and the metropolitan area at 946,362. Tucson is the second largest city in Arizona.

Tucson was developed on a grid plan which was used in many United States cities. Two main streets extend through the city and divide the city into quarters. In Tucson, those streets are Stone Avenue and Broadway Boulevard. However, the city has expanded to the east in a way to move that center. The distinct neighborhoods in Tucson, include:

  • Downtown – Includes: Presidio District, Convention District and the Congress Street Arts & Entertainment District
  • Central or Midtown – An old part of town. Reid Park, Reid Park Zoo and Hi Corbett Field are in midtown.
  • South Side – Contains Tucson International Airport and Tucson Electric Park
  • West Side – Contains urban and suburban development. Santa Cruz River and the foothills of the Tucson Mountains are in this area.
  • North Side – Commercial zones are prevalent in this area. Upscale boutiques, art galleries and restaurants are in the north side.
  • East Side – This area was developed during the 1950’s and 1970’s. There are corporate and financial businesses here.
  • Southeast – Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is on the southeast side of Tucson.
  • Northwest Side – There are rural areas, affluent areas, residential areas and many golf courses and resorts are on the northwest side.

There are two prevalent seasons in Tucson – summer and winter. In addition, there are fall, spring and monsoon season. Low humidity and warm weather are common in summer. Monsoon season is from mid June to August or September. High humidity, intense rainfall, severe thunderstorms and flash floods are common during monsoon season. Fall is from October through December and it is dry with temperatures between 55 and 84 degrees. Winters are mild with temperatures between 30 and 75 degrees. On the rare ocassion there is snow, but it is usually gone within a day. Spring begins in February or March and has temperatures between 45 and 88 degrees.

The University of Arizona makes a major contribution to the Tucson economy. Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is another large employer in the area. These employers are part of the reason that Tucson has a high number of high tech jobs and businesses.

The large numbers of attractions, hotels and resorts in Tucson have created a large tourism market in the area. "Snowbirds" who are looking for milder winter weather spend time and money in Tucson. A number of these “snowbirds” own second homes and contribute to the economy and the property tax numbers.
