Yuma had a population of 84,688 in 2005. The city is 106 square miles and the city is at an elevation of 138 feet. Native American tribes were the first people to settle the area. In 1540, Hernando de Alarcon and Melchior Diaz realized the crossing of the Colorado River was a perfect place for a town.

The Yuma Crossing is known for steamboat crossing and they are seen along the river. As early as the 1850's these boats transported people and equipment for the mines and military outposts in the area. The Southern Pacific Railroad crossed the river over a bridge in 1870 and this helped the city continue to grow. Cesar Chavez was a famous farm labor organizer who was born and lived in Yuma.
