In 2000, Modesto had a population of 188,856 and is estimated to be over 206,000 in 2007. Modesto is centrally located between Yosemite National Park, Sacramento, San Jose and San Francisco.   • Rail service - Amtrak San Joaquins makes six stops each day between Oakland and Bakersfield and two stops between Sacramento and Bakersfield. Modesto and Empire Traction Railroad is a 5 mile short line which serves industry and other customers.
  • Roadways - California State Route 99, 132 and 108. State Route 108 opens in May or June and stays open until the first snow. State Route 108 leads into Stanislaus National Forest and Inyo National Forest.
  • Air Travel - Southeastern part of the city. Service to San Francisco International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.
  • Public Transportation - Modesto Area Express, San Joaquin Regional Transit District and the Stanislaus Regional Transit.

Modesto created an updated general plan for the city in the late 1980's. The purpose was to create a comprehensive evaluation of air quality, environmental noise, soil contamination, visual impacts and water quality.
