Riverside Moving Quote
Riverside is a part of the Greater Los Angeles Area.
In 2006, the population was over 305,000 and the city covered 78 square miles.
The city is known as "The City of Trees".
John W North founded
the city in the 1870's. He was an abolitionist who also founded Northfield, Minnesota.
Several years after the town was founded, navel oranges were planted and they
well, so the planting was expanded. English and Canadian investors brought
their ideas and traditions to the area and the prosperous residents accepted many
of these ideas. Soon after, Southern California
got its first golf course and polo field to cater to these residents.
Two years after the
first orange trees were planted, Eliza Tibbets planted two Brazilian navel
orange trees and the climate was ideal for the plants and they thrived. These
oranges started a different sort of "gold" rush and the citrus industry was
established.
At one
time the largest Chinatown in California was
located in Riverside,
but the buildings were destroyed in the 1970's. The area originally known as
"Eastside" is located east of downtown Riverside.
Workers in this area were Mexican immigrant workers and now Oaxacan workers
have taken their place. Korean and Japanese immigrant workers used to come to
the area for the citrus harvest. Now there are Chinese American and Korean
Americans living in the Arlington and La Sierra
sections of Riverside.

Riverside
is considered a "smog belt" because the air pollution is above average in the
area. The National Campaign Against Dirty Air Power found that Riverside-San
Bernardino-Ontario was one of the most polluted areas in the country. The city
is working to reduce pollution through mass transit and buses that use natural
gas. The city has a general plan that began in 1994 and was updated in 2004. It
includes plans for housing, natural resources, noise and seismic safety.
