Boulder is the 11th
largest city in Colorado. In 2005, the estimated
population was 91,685 and the Boulder Metropolitan area has 280,440 people. In
addition the Denver-Aurora-Boulder area has 2,869,377 people. The city is 25
square miles and is at an elevation of 1,655 feet above sea level.
There
are many interesting geographic features near Boulder, including: Flagstaff Mountain, Arapahoe glacier, Eldorado Canyon, and Boulder Creek. In
1899, The US Congress established an open space around Boulder with 1800 acres which is
located between South Boulder Creek and Sunshine Canyon. The "open space" was
supposed to contain growth but instead it has pushed the growth out further.
Boulder also has an Urban Wildlife
Management Plan and it established policies about how urban wildlife would be
managed and protected in the area. The local ecosystems, lakes, parks, and
wetlands are managed and they are closed or changed when needed to preserve the
ecosystem.
Mountains
in the vicinity protect the city from severe storms. Winter and spring bring
the most precipitation to the city and there are about 83 inches of snow each
year. Even with this amount of snow, winter is mild. Warm Chinook winds bring
warmth over the mountains and into the area. The average high in January is in
the mid 40's and in the mid 80's in July.
Boulder offers a variety of
recreational options for residents and tourists.
