Clearwater is located west of Tampa. The 2000 census put the population at
108,787. The city is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan
area. The four county area contains 2.7 million people, that makes it the third
largest metropolitan area in the southeastern part of the country.
Clearwater was a major training location for US soldiers
during World War II before they were sent to Europe
and the Pacific. Hotels in the area were used as barracks to accommodate the
troops. It was common during these years for troops to march along downtown
streets. The city had blackouts at night. Some secluded islands in the area
were used as targets for the Army Air Corps bombing practice.

The
worldwide "spiritual headquarters" for the Church
of Scientology is located in Clearwater. It was founded
in the 1970's when the "United Churches of Florida" bought the Fort Harrison Hotel for
$3 million. This kept the identity of the actual owners a secret from the city
council. When the local residents learned the true identity of the owners, they
tried to oust the group from the city. The group didn't leave and has expanded
over the years. The high rise complex named the "Super Power
Building" will contain a
huge Scientology cross on top of the building and the cross will tower over the
city. Relations between the church and the city improved somewhat over the
years.
