Augusta Georgia had a population of 195,182 in 2000. The city and county government were consolidated in 1996 and it began to operate as Augusta-Richmond County.  However, now it is simply known as Augusta, Georgia instead of the consolidated name. The towns of Blythe and Hephzibah operate separately.

The city covers 306 square miles and sits at an elevation of 420 feet above sea level. Augusta is also known as "The Garden City (of the south)", "Masters City" and "The AUG".

Summers are humid and winters are mild in Augusta. The summer high is around 90 degrees and the average low is 68 degrees. Winter temperatures usually fall between 34 and 58 degrees.

The United States government moved the Signal Training Center and Military Police School to the Augusta area in 1948. Later that year, the Clarks Hill Reservoir was created when a new dam was built. Plans for the Savannah River Plant proceeded in 1950. These things contributed to Augusta's status as an urban industrial center in the later half of the twentieth century.

The art community and downtown boosters began to hold weekly events in downtown Augusta to help the revitalization efforts in 1995. It's a festival which brings people to the downtown area. There are local bands, art galleries open late and street performers. Businesses have returned to the downtown area since 1995. There are also several art galleries downtown.
