Roswell King was travelling through northern Georgia in 1830. He realized it was a great place for a cotton mill and for a plantation. Several years later, he returned to the area and built the mill that would be the largest in the northern part of Georgia. He brought a number of slaves with him to build the various buildings that his mill would need. The business grew over the years and at the time of the Civil War, it employed over 400 people.

Union soldiers captured the city and they sent the mill workers north, so they couldn't continue working if the mills were rebuilt in the future. Barrington King did rebuild the mills after the Civil War and they returned to production. Some freed African-Americans continued to live in the area and they got paid jobs.
