Grosse
Point Lighthouse is located in Evanston.
The federal government pushed for a lighthouse in the area after several
maritime disasters in the waters near Evanston.
In 1860, the Lady Elgin wrecked and
killed 400 people. The people of Evanston
petitioned the government to build a lighthouse, but nothing was done about the
problem until after the Civil War. The lighthouse was completed in 1873. The
lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
The
government gave the property and buildings surrounding the lighthouse to the
city of Evanston
in 1935. After the Pearl Harbor attack, the
Coast Guard decommissioned the lighthouse in 1941. The Coast Guard leased the
lighthouse to the city, with the provision that it could be reclaimed if needed
for official use. The lighthouse was relit in 1945 and it is a secondary aid to
navigation. It's also a tourist attraction and is located within the Lighthouse
Park District of Evanston, Illinois.
