Waterloo Moving Quote
Waterloo had a population in 2000
of 68,747. It is part of the Cedar Falls-Waterloo metropolitan area which has a
combined population of 162,263. The city is 62 square miles with 1.3 square
miles on water. The elevation is 856 feet.
The
city has historically been predominantly white. However, African Americans were
attracted to the area because there were plenty of entry level jobs in
meatpacking and other industries. The government settled Bosnian refugees in
the 1990's. A new packing plant attracted many Hispanics in the 1990's. The
diversity has worked pretty well, but there have been some tensions. African
Americans settled in the "east" part of town. White residents lived in the
"east" and "west" parts of town. The west part of town prospered and that caused
some divisions with the residents. These tensions magnified competition in the
local East High
School and West
High School. Central High School was built in the western
part of town.
