Winters are cold in the northwestern part of the state and cool to mild in the southwestern part of the state. Western Kansas usually only has 16 inches of rain per year. The Chinook winds can bring the winter temperatures into the 80’s in western Kansas. The southeast part of the state can get 46 inches of rain, while the southwest may only get 16 inches of rain.
