Louisiana Moving Quote

Louisiana is located in the southern portion of the United States on the Gulf of Mexico. Baton Rouge is the capital of Louisiana. New Orleans is the largest city in the state.

The weather in Louisiana is a classic example of a subtropical climate. It has a short, mild winter and a long, hot summer with plenty of humidity. The Gulf of Mexico has a big influence on the weather in the state. There is plenty of precipitation and the only chance of snow is a couple of inches per year in the northern part of the state. Louisiana is a target for hurricanes especially in the low lying area around New Orleans. Thunderstorms are common throughout the state and the state averages 27 tornadoes a year.

Major hurricane history in the state includes:

  • Hurricane Rita (September 24, 2005) – It was a category 3 when it hit southwest LA with flooding and the damaged levees broke and areas flooded again.
  • Hurricane Katrina (August 29, 2005) – It was a category 3 when it hit southwest LA and damaged the levees around New Orleans. Two million people were displaced because of the resulting damage and 1500 died.
  • Hurricane Andrew (August 1992) – Category 3, it hit south central LA. Thousands lost power and hundreds of millions of dollar in crop were destroyed.
  • Hurricane Betsy (September 9, 1965) – A category 3 when it hit the coast. Caused over $1 billion in damage, areas of New Orleans were flooded.
  • Hurricane Camille (August 1969) – A category 5 hurricane with a 23 foot storm surge and the storm killed 250 people. The brunt of the storm hit Mississippi and there was less impact in Louisiana.
  • Hurricane Audrey (June 1957) – Category 4 storm that destroyed or damaged 80% of the homes and businesses in the southwest part of the state. 40,000 were homeless and over 300 died.

 

The state has a number of areas that are protected areas. The National Park Service has a number of locations and there is a Federal National Forest and state parks and recreation areas in the state. Forty eight rivers, streams and bayous are protected throughout the state. The following areas are managed:

  • Cane River Creole National Historical Park
  • Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve
  • New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park
  • Poverty Point National Monument
  • Saline Bayou
