Many of the city’s residents were evacuated before Hurricane Katrina hit east of the city. But, the following day, the levees around the city failed and cause monumental flooding. Tens of thousands of residents were transported to the Louisiana Superdome and the Morial Convention Center after the levees broke. Over 1500 people died in the Greater New Orleans area after the storm. The Lower Ninth Ward flooded again from Hurricane Rita’s storm surge.
