Clinton is usually called Clinton Township and it's a Chicago suburb. In 2000, the
township had a population of 95,648. That makes it the ninth largest community
in the state of Michigan. The township is named
after the Clinton River. The area is 28 square miles
and it is at an elevation of 876 feet.
The
township has attractive scenery and well respected educational and medical
institutions. There are also many recreational options in the area. Athletic
fields are located beside the old canal. The area also has gardens, a fishing
pond, a hill for sleigh riding and a gazebo for concerts in the summer and
weddings.
The
area had a difficult history for Indians who lived in the area. In 1825 the Erie Canal was finished and that made
it possible to ship items or passengers to the Great Lakes area from the east coast.
The Clinton River Navigation Company was formed in 1827 and they planned a
canal that would extend from Frederick to Lake Michigan, using the Clinton and Kalamazoo Rivers. This became unnecessary and
was replaced by the railroads by 1850.
In
early years, lumber was a major part of the local economy. Over the years, many
acres of land were cleared and farming became important to the economy.
The Festival of the Senses is a celebration of the
