Westland Moving Quote

Westland is 16 miles from downtown Detroit. The city had a population of 86,602 in 2000. Westland is a very diverse area and there are housing options from $30,000 (in Norwayne) up to $380,000 (in other areas). There is a big difference in these homes and the surrounding neighborhoods, but it shows the variety of neighborhoods in the city. Westland is 20 square miles and the elevation is 666 feet above sea level.

The area was originally home to the Pottawatomi Indians. There were several Algonquin tribes that hunted in that area. In 1918, Henry Ford purchased an old flour mill and restored the property to use it to make stencils for Ford car parts.

In 1827, the area was organized as Bucklin Township and the following cities are in the area that was originally designated as Bucklin Township. These cities include: Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Garden City, Inkster, Livonia, Redford Township, and Wayne.

Bucklin was divided into the Lima and Richland Townships in 1829. These names were changed to Nankin and Pekin Township in 1833. Other areas divided off and became independent cities over the years.

Nankin became the largest township in the world in the 1960's when the population reached 70,000. Livonia tried to annex an area of Nankin which contained the Westland Shopping Center. Soon thereafter, Nankin was incorportated as the city of Westland. It became te fourth largest city in Wayne County.
