The city is located on the northern shore of Lake Superior and it is a seaport. At 2,300 miles away, it is further from the ocean than any other deep water port. To get to the Atlantic Ocean, any vessel must travel through the Erie Canal/New York State Barge Canal or the Saint Lawrence Seaway. The city is 87 square miles with 68 square miles on land and 19 square miles on water. The elevation is 702 feet.

Summers in Duluth are cool and winters are long and cold. Lake Superior cools the city and led to the nickname "The Air Conditioned City". Winter temperatures are often below freezing for weeks at a time. Snow is consistent through winter from December and March. Summer high temperatures are in the 70's and 80's with the lows in the upper 40 and low 50's. Winter temperatures range from negative single digits to the low 20's.

Duluth and Superior, Wisconsin are called the Twin Ports. There is a harbor the two cities share and it is one of the most important ports on the Great Lakes. Iron ore and grain are shipped out of the area. Duluth and Superior have local nautical history museums and the only US all freshwater aquarium is in Duluth.

Duluth is a regional hub for the northeastern portion of Minnesota, northwestern portion of Wisconsin and the western upper peninsula of Michigan. The area is known for shipping agricultural products, coal and taconite.
