Gulfport Moving Quote
The
second largest city in Mississippi is Gulfport with a population of
71,127 in 2000. It is part of the Gulfport-Biloxi Mississippi metropolitan
area. Gulfport is known as the home of the US Navy Seabees for the
east coast. The city is 64 square miles with over 7 square miles on water.
The
vision statement for Gulfport is to have a picturesque
waterfront city on the Gulf of Mexico. It will have a diverse
culture, safe neighborhoods and an economy which is progressive.
The
city was hit by the eastern side of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. The majority of the city was flooded and the
waterfront area was destroyed along with areas further inland. Previously, Gulfport sustained severe damage
from Hurricane Camille on August 17, 1969.
Gulfport was incorporated July 28, 1898. The harbor was complete in 1902 and the Port of Gulfport became an operational
seaport. In the 21st century, the Port of Gulfport brings millions of dollars
into the local economy. The city was originally a lumber and port city. It now
has almost 7 miles of man made beaches on the Gulf of Mexico and is one of the fastest
growing areas in Mississippi.
