In 2006, Independence had a population of 109,400 and the city is 78 square miles. Independence was an important town on the frontier since it was founded in March 1827. Steamboats and cargo boats traveled from Independence to the Kansas River.

Mormons began moving to Jackson County, Missouri in 1831. Joseph Smith, Jr, the Latter Day Saint prophet located the prophesied temple to a location beside Courthouse Square. Congress determined that Independence would be the starting point for the Oregon Trail in the mid 1800's. President Harry S Truman grew up in the city and was elected to serve as a judge in 1922 and 1926. He contributed to public works projects, improved the roads, built a new County building, and created the Madonna of the Trail monuments which were dedicated to pioneer women.
