In
2006, Independence
had a population of 109,400 and the city is 78 square miles. Independence was an important town on the
frontier since it was founded in March 1827. Steamboats and cargo boats
traveled from Independence to the Kansas River.
Mormons
began moving to Jackson County, Missouri in 1831. Joseph Smith, Jr, the Latter
Day Saint prophet located the prophesied temple to a location beside Courthouse Square.
Tensions rose in the area and the Latter Day Saints left the area, but offshoot
groups returned and it became a base for: Community of Christ, Church of Christ
(the Temple lot)
and the Restoration Branches.
Congress determined that Independence would be the starting point for the Oregon Trail in the mid 1800's. President Harry S Truman
grew up in the city and was elected to serve as a judge in 1922 and 1926. He
contributed to public works projects, improved the roads, built a new County building,
and created the Madonna of the Trail monuments which were dedicated to pioneer
women.
The city is still important
to branches of the Latter Day Saints. The Community of Chris has an impressive
temple in the city. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a
visitors' center located nearby.
