St Joseph is the seventh largest city in Missouri. In 2000, the
population was 72,651 and the St
Joseph metropolitan area had an estimated population
of 122,306. The city is known as "St Joe".
St Joseph was founded in 1843 and it
was an outpost and frontier town. It was the last supply point and a jumping
off point on the Missouri River for people who
were headed to the "Wild West". At that time, St Joseph was the furthest western point that
could be reached on the existing railroads. The city is 44.5 square miles with
0.7 square miles is water.
St Joseph was one of the furthest
points on the Pony Express from April 1860 to October 1861. Any notable event
in the history of the town was April 3, 1882 when Jesse James was killed.
Heaton-Bowman-Smith Funeral Home has a Jesse James museum which is open to the
public. Jesse James home is also a tourist attraction and visitors can see the
actual bullet hole from the shot that killed him. The slogan for St Joseph is, "Where the
