St Louis is located in the state of Missouri. It lies along the Mississippi River. The city is 66 square miles and has a population of 353,837. The Metropolitan area has almost 2.8 million people. The city is known as the "Gateway City", "Gateway to the West", and "Mound City". The name “Gateway to the West” is because many people traveled through St Louis as they moved west in the early years of the United States.

The state gets Arctic air from Canada and tropical air from the Gulf of Mexico. There are four distinct seasons in the area. The average temperature is 56 degrees with an annual precipitation of 37 inches. The high in July is around 90 degrees and the low in January is 21 degrees. Winter is usually dry with as little as 6 inches of percipitation. There can be 10 inches of rain in the spring. Severe thunderstorms with high winds and large hail are common. Tornadoes, snow and ice storms happen ocassionally.

St Louis used to have a manufacturing and industrial economy, but has shifted to biotechnology, medical and science research. A number of large companies are based in St Louis. Some of these include: A G Edwards, Anheuser-Busch, Edward Jones, Energizer, Scottrade, and others.

The health care industry has grown in the area. BJC HealthCare is involved with Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St Louis Children's Hospital and eleven other hospitals. Saint Louis University School of Medicine is a leader in medical research and works with area hospitals.

Since the middle of the 1990's, St Louis saw an increase in housing rehabilitation and new construction. The cost of living seems to be a little below the national average and wages are slightly below average.
