Great Falls had a population of 56,690
in 2000 and it is the central city in the Great Falls
metropolitan area which includes all areas in Cascade County, Montana.
The city is known as the "Electric
City" because it has five
hydroelectric dams located in the vicinity. The city is 19.9 square miles with
0.4 square miles on water. The elevation is 3,330 feet above sea level.
The
city was named for a group of waterfalls involved with the Lewis and Clark
Expedition. The expedition had to travel around these waterfalls and it took
them 31 days of hard work to get past them. The site is marked by the Great
Falls Portage National Historic Landmark.
Great Falls was an important
industrial and supply center in the beginning of the twentieth century. There
were some tourist attractions in the area. These attractions included: Charles
Marion Russell's studio, the great
falls that the town was named after and the world's
tallest smokestack which was built by Anaconda Copper Mining Company in 1908.
It was 508 feet tall.
A
military base opened in 1940 and was a boost for the local economy. During the
second half of the century, rail transportation in the area began to slow down.
