Henderson is located five miles from Las Vegas. In 2000, the population was 175,381 and the 2005 census put the population at 232,146. Henderson has grown to a point where it’s replaced Reno as the second largest city in Nevada. The city covers 95 square miles. The city is known as “A place to call home”.
Henderson had its 50th anniversary in 2006. In the 1940’s there was a need for magnesium during World War II. The town was born to supply magnesium for the war effort. The Basic Magnesium supplied the metal for airplane parts and munitions. In 1947, magnesium wasn’t needed anymore and most of the 14,000 employees left the area. After the war, people were unsure what would happen to the town, but it was incorporated in 1953.
The Nevada legislature evaluated the situation and the Colorado River Commission of Nevada was given authority to buy the industrial plants. This action saved the town from becoming war surplus. In 1953, the town had a population of 7,410 and the town covered about 13 square miles.
Major shopping malls, movie theatres, restaurants and casino resorts are available to tourists and residents of Henderson. Over the past ten years, “Shakespeare in the Park” has been an ongoing cultural event in the city. The Multigenerational Facility at Liberty Point Is the only scenic bird preserve in Nevada.
There are twenty nine elementary schools, nine middle schools and nine high schools in the Henderson School System. Several universities are located in Henderson, they include: Nevada State College, Touro University Nevada and University of Southern Nevada.
