72,182. That made it one of the largest suburbs of New York

1962, the United States Supreme Court ruled on the Lincoln School
boundaries which created segregated elementary school districts. The Lincoln School was closed in 1965 and the

was destroyed by fire in May 1968. A student set the fire early in the morning
and no one was hurt. Students attended classes in trailers on alternating
schedules while the school was being rebuilt.
