Oregon is in the Pacific Northwest of the United States and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean. The Columbia and Snake rivers form the north and east borders of the state. The eastern desserts of the state average less than 8 inches of rain a year. But, the western coastal area gets over 200 inches annually. The more populated areas are usually wet.

Oregon is a producer of apples, cattle, dairy products, hazelnuts, other fruits, hops, potatoes and peppermint. Oregon was a major wine producer since the years before prohibition, and it became a significant industry in the 1970’s. Grapes grown in Oregon are the same variety found in French regions.

Oregon is a major timber producing and logging state. However, the timber industry over harvested and there are lawsuits pending which have reduced the amount of timber being produced. This shift is obvious through events, such as: Weyerhauser acquiring Willamette Industries and Louisiana Pacific moving its headquarters from Portland to Nashville.

Technology and services are major industries in Oregon. Some of these companies include: Tektronix and Intel. The dot-com bust in 2001 hit the area hard and many of the technology businesses reduced their number of employees. Oregon is the headquarters for: Nike, Inc., Harry and David Operations Corp, and Musician’s Friend. Portland is home to Graphics Arts Center Publishing – the largest trade book publishing company in the west.
