Providence is the largest city in Rhode Island with 175,255 people. It is also the capital of Rhode Island. Providence was one of the first cities that were settled in the United States and it's now the third largest city in New England.

The city was named after "God's merciful providence" by Roger Williams who was exiled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The city became known as the "Beehive of Industry", "The Renaissance City" and "The Divine City". Providence covers 20 square miles and sits at an elevation of 75 feet above sea level.

There are twenty five neighborhoods in Providence. These are grouped together.

  • East Side - Blackstone, College Hill, Fox Point, Hope, Mount Hope and Wayland
  • Jewelry District - enclosed by I95, I195 and Providence River
  • North End - Charles and Wanskuck
  • South Side - Elmwood, Lower South Providence, Upper South Providence and the West End
  • West Broadway - south half of Federal Hill, north part of West End

Summers are hot, winters are cold and the Providence area has high humidity throughout the year. Its location on the Atlantic Ocean keeps Providence warmer than areas that are further inland. High temperatures in January are around 37 degrees. July is the warmest month with temperatures around 83 degrees. The area gets plenty of precipitation with three to four inches per month. Providence can be affected by Nor'easters which can cause heavy snowfall and blizzards. Hurricanes can affect the area, but they are rare.

Providence was industrialized in 1830 and was one of the first industrialized cities in the US. Jewelry and silverware are two of the largest industries in the city, although most manufacturing has dwindled. The present day economy is primarily made up of education, finance and health care. Government offices and services are segments of the local economy.
