South Dakota Moving Quote

South Dakota is in the United States Midwest. The state is divided by the Missouri River. This created a physical, social and economic divide. These sides are known as the East River and the West River. The Black Hills are in the southwest part of the state. Mount Rushmore is located in the Black Hills and this is one reason why it's a prime tourist area.

The state of South Dakota is known as "The Mount Rushmore State". The state had a population of 754,844 in 2000 and it is 77,163 square miles. The capital is Pierre and Sioux Falls is the largest city. Harney Peak is the highest point at 7,242 feet and the lowest point is Big Stone Lake at 966 feet.

An agricultural economy and a rural lifestyle has been the tradition throughout the history of South Dakota. In more recent years, the state is working to diversify the economic base and to keep its residents.

There are four distinct seasons in South Dakota, with hot summers and very cold winters. The average summertime high is 90 degrees and the average winter temperatures are below freezing and the low is around 10 degrees. The temperature in the summer can be over 100 for short periods. There's usually about fifteen to thirty inches of precipitation a year. Severe thunderstorms can be frequent in the summer. These storms can include hail, high winds and thunder. Eastern South Dakota is within tornado alley and they can be as frequent as in parts of Kansas and Oklahoma. There are occasional blizzards in the state.

The National Park Service protects several areas in South Dakota. The two national parks include: Badlands National Park and Wind Cave National Park. Mount Rushmore National Memorial is in the Black Hills. The other areas in the National Park Service include:

  • Jewel Cave National Monument near Custer
  • Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail
  • Minuteman Missile National Historic Site
  • Missouri National Recreational River

Agriculture is a prime element of the economy in South Dakota. These products include: alfalfa, beef, corn, mutton, oats, pork, poultry, soybeans, sunflowers, wheat, and wool. Ethanol production and meat packing are an important part of the economy.

Tourism is important to the state. The natural attractions in the Black Hills, Deadwood, Mount Rushmore and other national parks in the surrounding area  attract many people to the area. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a large tourist event. Tourism contributes over 33,000 jobs and $2,000,000,000 to the state.
