Rapid City is in western South Dakota. It's the second largest city
in the state with a 2005 population of 62,167. The metropolitan area had a
population of 138,763 in 2005. It's been estimated that the city had over
70,000 people in 2007 and 150,000 in the metropolitan area. Rapid City is considered to be "the Gateway
to the Black Hills of South Dakota". A small mountain range divides the city
into the western and eastern sections. The city is 44.7 square miles and the
elevation is 3,202 feet.

Rapid City has grown into the
surrounding foothills and especially in the last two decades. This has caused a

the Westberry Trail fire in 1988. Rapid Creek flows through the entire city,
but flood prone areas are mostly undeveloped. That is because of the Black
Hills Flood in 1972.

but distinct. Summer temperatures range from the low 50's to the mid 80's.
Winter temperatures range from the low teens to the mid 40's. The highest
