The third largest city in Tennessee is Knoxville. In 2000, the population was 173,890 and the Knoxville metropolitan population was 655,400. The city covers 98 square miles and has an elevation of 936 feet above sea level.

The city is known as "The Marble City". In the early 1900's there were a number of quarries in the city which supplied pink marble all over the United States. Several well known buildings in Washington were constructed using Knoxville marble.

It is also known as the "Underwear Capital of the World". In the thirties, there were twenty textile and clothing mills in the city. The mills started closing in the 1950's and these closings caused a 10% drop in the population by 1960. Other nicknames include: "K-Town", "Bog Orange Country", Knox Vegas", "865" and "Rocky Top".

Summers in Knoxville are hot and humid. Average temperatures in July are 69 to 88 degrees. Winters are cool and snow does fall. January average temperatures are 30 to 47 degrees, but temperatures can dip into the teens. Knoxville usually gets less than 10 inches of snow each year.

A major factor in the Knoxville economy is the University of Tennessee. Other factors include:

The Tennessee Valley Corridor extends from Blacksburg, Virginia to Huntsville, Alabama. However, Knoxville is the heart of the corridor. Knoxville's location makes it a central point in the eastern United States. It is close to two major Interstates, warehousing facilities and distribution companies.
