Arlington Moving Quote
Arlington has a population of 203,000 and is located
across the Potomac River from Washington
DC. The count is 26 square miles
and is the smallest self-governing county in the United States. CNN Money in 2006,
ranked Arlington as the most educated city in
the United States.
This is based on the percentage of residents who have graduate degrees. The
Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery
are located in Arlington
County.
Arlington is considered to
be a city, but officially it's a county with no incorporated cities. The Commonwealth of Virginia prevents a city from being
created in a county with less than 1,000 people per square miles, so it remains
a county.
Arlington National Cemetery is the cemetery
which was established for military personnel during the Civil War. Almost
300,000 people are buried there and that makes it the second largest cemetery
in the country. Two hundred acres of Lee's property was confiscated by the United States
government during the Civil War to create a military cemetery. In 1882, the
Supreme Court ruled the government needed to pay for the property and the Lee
family received $150,000. There are veterans from all US war's buried in the
cemetery, from the Revolutionary War to the battles in Afghanistan and Iraq. Individuals who died before
the Civil War were re-interred after 1900. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is
on a hill overlooking Washington
DC. President John F Kennedy,
Jackie Kennedy, John F Kennedy Jr and Robert Kennedy are buried in the National Cemetery. William Taft is the only other
president who is buried there.
