Sandy is 13 miles south of Salt Lake City at the base of the Wasatch Mountains. Originally the area was settled by Bannock, Paiute, and Shoshone Indians. These Indians lived in the mountains in the winter and near Bear Lake where the fishing was good in the summer. Sandy was one square mile when the city was established in the 1860's and 1870's.

The railroad had a major impact on the history of Sandy. In 1873, Sandy was connected to Salt Lake City and ore was transported along with other items to and from the area. Mines failed in the 1890's and at that time the city changed from mining to agricultural pursuits. Many mining towns simply disappeared when the mines dried up, but Sandy's location helped it to survive. Over time, the focus of the city centered around, business, church, family and farming. Nothing much changed in the city until the late 1960's.

During the 1960's, the city began to spread in all directions. The community took shape in the 1970's and schools, public services and shopping options were offered by the city. The city had always been tied to Salt Lake City, but in the 1980's, the city worked to create an identity of its own as it looked to the future.
