population was 68,336 and the population was estimated to be 101,638 by 2007.

The city is at an elevation of 4,330 feet and it is surrounded by mountains that reach almost 12,000 feet. Mormons settled West Jordan in the mid 1800's. West Jordan is almost 31 square miles.

Mormon settlers came into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 with Brigham Young. They considered this area to be their Holy Land and they named the river, the Western Jordan as an acknowledgment of the River Jordan in Palestine.

Early economic ventures in the area include a sawmill in 1850 which was built by Archibald Gardner, a devout Mormon. There is a collection of mills and houses in the area to this day and they were built by Gardner. Agriculture, milling and mining were the mainstays of the early economy in the area. In 1851, the first leather tannery was added.

The area is one of the fastest growing cities in Utah and this includes retail and educational growth. Salt Lake Community College is adding a new campus, Jordan Valley Hospital is expanding and there are plans for transportation additions and expansion.

Transportation and education are big issues in the city and this is mainly due to the rapid population increases. The population went from 4,000 to 100,000 in less than 40 years. The residents and city council are aware of the traffic concerns which need to be resolved. Roads are being improved and widened to accommodate the increased number of residents.
