settlers came into the Salt
Lake Valley
in 1847 with Brigham Young. They considered this area to be their Holy Land and
they named the river, the Western Jordan as an acknowledgment of the River

Early
economic ventures in the area include a sawmill in 1850 which was built by
Archibald Gardner, a devout Mormon. There is a collection of mills and houses
in the area to this day and they were built by Gardner. Agriculture, milling and mining were
the mainstays of the early economy in the area. In 1851, the first leather
tannery was added.
