Virginia Moving Quote
Virginia is a Commonwealth in the southeastern part of the United States. It was one of the original thirteen colonies. Richmond is the capital and Virginia Beach is the largest city. The state is known as the "Mother of Presidents" because eight presidents were born there, including: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Woodrow Wilson.
It’s also known as the "Old Dominion" and the "Mother of States". Portions of the original Commonwealth of Virginia are now part of the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington DC. The state is 42,793 square miles and has a population of over 7.5 million. The highest point in the state is Mount Rogers at 5,729 feet above sea level and the lowest is where the state meets the Atlantic Ocean.
A portion of Virginia’s Eastern Shore is separated from the main body of the state by the Chesapeake Bay. It is part of the Delmarva Peninsula which is made up of part of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Virginia is divided into six regions:
- Ridge and Valley – East of the Blue Ridge Mountains
- Shenandoah Valley – West of the Blue Ridge Mountains
- Blue Ridge Mountains
- Foothills – East of the Blue Ridge, containing Madison, Green, Albemarle and Nelson Counties
- Piedmont – East of the Blue Ridge and west of the Tidewater
- Tidewater – west of the Atlantic Ocean and includes the Eastern Shore

The state can be a target for hurricanes near the Chesapeake Bay. Cold fronts reach into the state over the mountains and bring significant snow. Northern Virginia which makes up some of the suburbs of Washington DC is seeing a change in temperature because of the growth and expansion in the area.
While major hurricanes usually do not hit Virginia, the state does get the remnants of large storms. This is usually in the form of heavy rain and some high winds. There are usually 30-50 days of severe thunderstorm activity throughout the state. The state has become more prone to ice storms in recent years.
The 2006 Forbes Magazine chose Virginia as the "best climate for business" in the United States. This was because of the economic growth in the state along with business costs/incentives and the quality of life. The state has a diversified economic base. That base is made up of the following elements: cattle, tobacco, communications, consulting, defense contracting, diplomats, military installations, peanut farming, professional government, software, soy, vineyards and wineries.
Richmond has a Federal Reserve Bank, one of only 12 in the country. Seven Fortune 500 companies are located in Northern Virginia. Before the Civil War, the state was the wealthiest in the south and it bounced back quickly after the Civil War and the Depression. It is one of the wealthiest states in the south today.
The government has a strong presence in Virginia. This includes: Air Force facilities, the Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Defense, Fort Belvoir, National Science Foundation, Norfolk Naval Station, the Pentagon, and Quantico military base. A large number of active duty military personnel live in Virginia.
