The metropolitan area has 1,645,015 people. 

Suffolk was a port town in 1742. The city was a gateway for land transportation to areas in the eastern part of South Hampton Road. There have been various railroads travelling through the city through the centuries. A portion of the Great Dismal Swamp is within the city limits of Suffolk.
