but broke away in 1863. It's the only state in the United States that was created by
seceding from an existing state. Charleston

The highest point in the state is on Spruce Knob at 4,863 feet above sea level
and the lowest point is on the Potomac River

issues in the 21st century. The West Virginia economy is very fragile and it
has the third lowest per capita income in the country. West Virginia has been a site of oil
drilling, but only a limited number of small to medium size oil and natural gas
fields.
