Appleton is located in Wisconsin along the Fox River. The city is 100 miles north of Milwaukee. In 2005, the population was 70,217 and it is the central city in the Appleton-Oshkosh-Neenah metropolitan area which has about 350,000 people. The city is 21.4 square miles with 0.5 square miles on water. The elevation is 790 feet above sea level.

The village was incorporated in 1853 and it became a city in 1857. The population grew steadily over the years. Lawrence University is in Appleton and the city grew as the school grew.

The city had a number of interesting firsts: the first telephone in Wisconsin, the first incandescent light west of the east coast, the first hydroelectric power was generated in the city. This power was used to light the Hearthstone House. Harry Houdini claimed to have been born in Appleton in 1874, but he was actually born in Hungary.

The Valley Fair Shopping Center was built in 1954 and there are claims that it was the first enclosed shopping center in the country. Shopping centers in Minnesota, Rhode Island and Seattle dispute that milestone. After 53 years, demolition of the mall began in 2007.
