is 790 feet above sea level. The city is named after Menominee Chief Oshkosh.
The fur trade was active in the area, but it never became important in fur
trading. The lumber industry is the thing that helped the development of the
area. In 1853, the city was incorporated and it had a population of 2,800.
The
navigable waterways in the area helped to establish the lumber trade. The
railroad was another boost to the area. Oshkosh
was the third largest city in Wisconsin
in 1870 with over 12,000 people. The Oshkosh Daily Northwestern newspaper was
established in the early 1870's.
Fortunes
were made in the lumber industry in Oshkosh.

known historic areas of the city were built. The Oshkosh Brewing Company was
established around 1900.
